We are seeking data scientists to join our team in Abingdon to develop innovative approaches in geoscientific data interpretation for the oil and gas sector.

Successful candidates will work alongside a team of experienced geoscientists and software developers.

You would be responsible for the design and implementation of solutions aimed at improving subsurface interpretation workflows for our customers and making our internal workflows more efficient.

We are ideally looking for candidates with strengths in one or more of the following subject areas:


  • Machine Learning
  • Deep Learning
  • Natural Language Processing
  • Text Mining
  • Geoscientific data analysis


Job Description

Under general supervision, assists in designing and implementing new data science solutions for use in Landmark software applications and Neftex Insights content.

Independently manages time to ensure deliverables are met with guidance from the Manager of Assisted Interpretation.

Works on projects/products of moderate scope and complexity. Should assist in recommending algorithms or models and best practises where not already specified.

May train other team members and employees in the wider Landmark organisation in using data science tools and techniques.

Skills are typically acquired through the completion of a Master’s degree or PhD in a numerical science or computing subject.

Ideal candidates will have good technical commercial experience where they have applied data science techniques to solve problems in technical industries.


Required skills:

  • A strong background in data analysis, statistics and machine learning.
  • Excellent technical experience with scientific programming languages (ideally Python).
  • Experience in using common data science libraries (e.g. pandas, numpy, scipy, scikit-learn, nltk, matplotlib, tpot, keras, tensorflow, etc.).
  • Proficiency in geospatial data analysis.
  • Proficiency in query languages (SQL).
  • Ability to communicate your work and ideas with specialists and non-specialists.
  • Willingness to learn about fundamental geoscientific concepts and collaborate with subject matter experts.
  • Strong organization and project management skills.
  • The ability to manage multiple projects, following through from start to completion with minimal supervision.
  • Experience of working in remote teams across multiple time zones.


Advantageous skills:

  • Experience with geoscience data types (LAS, SEG-Y, etc.) and databases (OpenWorks, Recall, etc.)
  • Experience in geological, petrophysical and geophysical data interpretation.
  • Experience of working with geographically dispersed teams.
  • Experience of deploying and scaling machine learning algorithms in a production environment.
  • Experience of data mining/text data mining from scientific literature/reports.
  • Experience with graph databases/semantic data models.
  • Experience of working in Agile Scrum product development methodology.
