We are looking for an R&D scientist who will support the company’s growth by strengthening our technology team, especially but not exclusively towards the development of innovative sensor technology.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

The R&D Scientist will be responsible for generating, developing and evaluating low TRL concepts before they can be considered for NPI development. These concepts may be related to sensors, instruments or measurement concepts. This person will be at the forefront of company development and innovation. This is a technological role and the candidate will be expected to be able to demonstrate excellence in a number of areas, namely:

 

Essential Requirements:

  • R&D experience, a PhD or equivalent in applied science or engineering is a must have
  • Strong background in material properties
  • Strong background in guided optics and EM waves propagations
  • Strong background in mathematics
  • Extensive experience in Numerical solution in Multiphysics environment, with tools like ComSol
  • Extensive experience of data processing and signal processing, using tools like Matlab
  • Capable of generating and working with complex and abstracting concepts but also capable of putting in place hands-on proof of the same concept with practical demonstration.
  • Excellent writing and oral reporting capabilities, capable of convincing others
  • Highly numerate, computer literate.
  • Good interpersonal skills, effective team player.
  • Fluent English speaker and already resident in the UK.
     

Desirable Characteristics:

  • Knowledgeable of / experience with Photonics and optoelectronics devices and equipment (Semiconductor Laser, Photodiode, etc…)
  • Any experience of designing mechanical assemblies
  • Any experience of developing software
  • Any knowledge of or experience of force transducer mechanism
  • Familiarity with at least the basic concepts of metrology
  • Any practical experience with optical fibre
  • Experience of designing any physical measurement devices
  • Flexible to travel to customer locations, occasionally international.
     

The Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate will have experience in a highly technological environment, He/she would possess experimental skills as well as strong theoretical knowledge. He/she would have been working on optical fibre sensing and would be fully knowledgeable on the specialities optical fibre manufacturing process, He/she would be comfortable working both independently or as part of a small team and be looking to develop his career over the next few years.
