A Chief Engineer is recognized as a technical authority in a specific engineering discipline and acts with general autonomy to see business opportunities, recognize possible technical solutions, and work with a cross-functional staff to deliver innovative products and services.  In this role, you will need to be creative, dynamic, passionate, and data-driven with the ability to effectively communicate and influence the internal teams and/or customers to deliver best-in-class solutions. This is a high visibility position where the incumbent is expected to frequently interact with Technology leadership, business leadership, and customers to formulate and plan technology delivery for electrical systems and applications.

 

General Duties & Responsibilities

  • Leverages a strong understanding of customer operations and challenges to focus and align key technology programs
  • Creates and leads IP efforts which are of strategic and material significance for long term technology and business vision
  • Provides technical expertise and business direction to establish scope across portfolio of projects
  • Provides advice on critical issues with top level officers of other organizations and companies
  • Provides advisory and consulting work for the organization as a recognized authority for broad program areas or highly specialized areas
  • Proactively collaborates with other personnel engaged in equipment design, maintenance, and operation to ensure safe, reliable deployment of high-performance solutions meeting customer requirements
  • Applies non-conventional concepts to oil field applications by collaborating with outside industries and universities
  • Mentor others on engineering designs and techniques by collaborating with other disciplines, product service lines and other industry experts
  • Participates in long term strategic Technology initiatives
  • Guides business decisions across locations and services by understanding multiple disciplines as related to oil industry
  • Communicates complicated technical concepts to non-technical managers and customers
  • Applies in-depth knowledge of applications to propose new platforms, systems and architectures
  • Cultivates a culture of collaboration to ensure that state-of-the-art technology is applied in the development of new customer technical solutions
  • Interact closely with suppliers to ensure performance, reliability and quality of components and subsystems
  • Participate in, make significant contributions to, and may provide leadership in professional societies
  • Participate in industry conferences and customer-facing events

 

Discipline-specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Works “hands-on” with the relevant equipment and systems.  This may be in the form of lab testing, full-scale testing, or field testing
  • Create specifications, procedures, installation instructions, test documents, etc
  • Reads and interprets electrical and mechanical drawings and diagrams, electrical schematics, piping, and instrument drawings (P&IDs), flow charts and cause and effect diagrams
  • Travels to active well sites, customer offices, vendor offices, training/conference venues, and other Halliburton offices as required.  This is typically 20-25% of the time available
  • Travel may encompass weekends and holidays
  • Develops and negotiates system-level requirements and assists in financial analysis, ensures completion of technical and detailed product specifications, manages technical risks, and ensures product meets technical performance in a timely fashion
  • Develop system-level solutions for applications focused on hydraulic fracturing using electric power and/or other large-scale surface equipment technology for oilfield operations

 

Education, experience, and knowledge:

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with at least 16- 20 years of electrical systems engineering experience in relevant areas of practice as described below.  Completion of a master’s degree in electrical engineering or similar discipline is preferred.
  • Experience in electrical system engineering using Medium/Low Voltage, and control systems for the upstream oil & gas industry with emphasis in well completion, stimulation, cementing, and/or offshore operations.  Alternative experience in electrical drive systems for heavy industrial applications, surface mining, wind power generation, medium voltage power transmission, micro-grids and controls systems will be considered.
  • Hands-on experience in the development of applications of electrical equipment and systems.
  • Experience with large-scale industrial processes (chemical, pharmaceutical, mining, oil & gas refining).
  • Solid understanding of medium and voltage electrical engineering concepts, enclosure design, protection systems, and sensor/component design & selection.
  • Strong background and knowledge in different aspects of control system design, signal processing and analyses, feedback loops & system dynamics.
  • Understanding of industry certification standards such as ATEX and IECEx, as well as experience in implementing these standards into designs for use in hazardous environments.
  • Knowledgeable in the application of engineering tools and methodologies like Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Design of Experiments (DoE), Lifecycle, Patents creations, and Litigation process, etc.
  • Understands microgrids, utility electrical interfaces, generators, industrial electrical distribution, medium voltage switchgear, transformers, motor control centers, AC motors, Variable Frequency Drives and protection systems.
