Nuclear Physicist (Physicist - Principal)

Position Description and Responsibilities

Under general direction from Senior Scientists and the Team Leader, applies physics theories, principles, and practices to develop technology for nuclear logging measurements in oil and gas wells. Duties will include:

  • Design logging instrumentation (tools) using computer modeling and experimentation
  • Work with engineers to implement the design
  • Characterize logging tools so as to convert tool measurements into the desired formation properties.
    • Specify detailed plans for laboratory measurements (to be acquired by technicians)
    • Analyze laboratory and computer-modeling data to devise the required algorithms
  • Work with the field to resolve systematic issues observed with the tools
  • Document work
  • Make internal presentations describing results, conclusions, and recommendations
  • Communicate well with colleagues, managers, and clients
  • Write papers for presentation at conferences such as SPWLA and SPE
  • Work in a safe manner and comply with all Halliburton HSE requirements

 

Education

  • Ph.D. in Physics (specializing in nuclear or particle physics) or Nuclear Engineering is preferred, although a master’s or Bachelors in Physics or Nuclear Engineering with sufficient experience is acceptable

  • Skills typically acquired through the completion of an undergraduate degree in Science, Engineering or similar discipline, and 2 years of related experience

 

Skills

The successful candidate should have a majority of the following skills.

  • Solid knowledge of basic physics

  • Familiarity with neutron and photon detection

  • Experienced with data analysis

  • Experimental experience

  • Experience with MCNP

  • Good programming skills (e.g., Python, C++, C#, FORTRAN)

  • Good problem-solving ability

  • Good oral and written English

  • Good communicator

  • Ability to take direction

  • Ability to collaborate with multi-discipline team
