Discipline Manager - Acoustic


Job description

The individual in this position is responsible for developing and leading initiatives to markedly accelerate to pace of innovation and technology development in Acoustic Logging within the Drilling and Evaluation Division. To accomplish this broad objective, he/she must: (1) Build and develop a team of scientists and engineers with technical and leadership competencies to meet the needs of the business and the broader Halliburton organization; (2) work closely with the Strategic Business Manager and the Technology Director to identify and prioritize technical areas of longer-range, strategic interest to the business; (3) coordinate and/or supervise projects and programs to deliver those technologies as appropriate; (4) work within Halliburton and externally to identify opportunities for technology acquisition and collaboration; (5) lead PSL initiatives to foster increased innovation, IP capture, and delivery of technology that meets or exceeds customer expectations.  


Job Roles

  • Lead the research and development of innovative acoustic/ultrasonic logging tools, techniques and  interpretation
  • Build a highly effective development team/discipline by assessing required competencies, recruiting and staffing the team with strong individuals and developing team members through performance assessment and feedback, coaching, training, development plans and actions
  • Provide leadership to the team/discipline, setting high expectations for behaviors consistent with our Code of Business Conduct, HSE and SQ objectives and for execution of projects and other activities
  • Work closely with PSL leadership to support development of PSL strategy
  • Lead identification of technical opportunity areas through research and networking with universities, national labs and external companies
  • Lead the team to identify, prioritize, resource and support Technology programs and projects to deliver growth and profitability in support of the PSL strategy
  • Develop budgets and forecasts for his/her area of responsibility and manages expenditures accordingly
  • Lead the team to maximize our Intellectual Property position through active patent filing, participation in freedom-to-operate assessments and competitive surveillance
  • Lead initiatives to drive innovative thinking and IP capture in areas including product technology, service delivery, modeling, interpretation, simulation, and manufacturing technology
  • Provides technical leadership and support on a range of issues related to acoustic in the PSL, including products, applications, and other processes
  • Promptly and effectively deal with compliance and other performance issues in a manner consistent with company policies and practices
  • Effectively handle administrative duties including salary administration, ensuring team compliance training is completed and up to date, proper processing and documentation of expenditures

Desired Skills and Experience


Position Qualifications

  • Minimum M.S. degree in Geophysics or Seismology or equivalent
  • Advanced degree strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in research, design, development, manufacturing  and commercialization of acoustic logging technology including:
    • Sonic/ultrasonic transducers, geophones, hydrophones, isolators
    • Modeling and interpretation techniques
  • Demonstrated R&D team leadership skills, including building and developing technical organizations and delivering technologies through vision and well-executed programs
  • Significant experience with IP processes including invention, patent filing and prosecution processes, freedom-to-operate assessment, and competitive assessment
  • Experience in developing university relationships and productive research programs with universities or other laboratories
  • Strong strategic thinking, initiative, and change agent abilities
  • Effective communications skills (including verbal, written, and presentation) and ability to adapt to his/her audience
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally to define, execute and meet business objectives
  • Significant experience interacting with customers and/or suppliers
