About the Role
The Principal Well Engineer serves as the technical authority for well engineering within complex, high-risk projects. This role leads the design, planning, and supports the execution of operations for onshore and offshore O&G wells, ensuring technical integrity across all phases—from concept and Basis of Design through operational delivery.
Acting as both a project-level engineering lead and subject matter expert, the position drives engineering excellence, supports operational decision-making, and mentors less experienced senior engineers while collaborating closely with Project Managers, operations and technical teams, and clients.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead development of well designs, Basis of Design (BoD), and operational programs for complex drilling projects.
• Serve as the engineering SME for technical studies, recurring challenges, and performance optimization initiatives.
• Ensure technical integrity across all phases of well planning and execution.
• Support creation, review, and approval of AFE (Authorization for Expenditure) and engineering deliverables.
• Conduct and validate risk assessments, ensuring safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible well programs.
• Provide real-time engineering support to operations, adapting plans based on field conditions and performance.
• Evaluate and optimize well designs, technologies, and execution strategies (e.g., HPHT, MPD, ERD, deepwater).
• Collaborate across PSLs and third-party providers to ensure integrated well delivery.
• Supervise and mentor less senior Well Engineers, driving capability development.
• Create and review technical engineering documentation, ensuring accuracy, quality, and compliance.
• Support medium- and long-term planning to align engineering solutions with project and business objectives.
Qualifications
Required
• Bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related STEM discipline.
• 12+ years of experience in well engineering, drilling operations, or related oil & gas roles.
• At least 8 years of international experience across both E&P Operators and Oil Field Service (OFS) companies.
• Proven experience leading complex well designs and implementing processes for well proposals, Basis of Design, and operational programs
• Strong expertise in HPHT, MPD, ERD, and onshore/offshore (including deepwater) operations.
• Demonstrated experience ensuring technical integrity across well planning and execution phases.
• Experience supporting real-time operations and adapting engineering plans based on field conditions.
• Strong expertise in drilling performance optimization and engineering analysis.
• Valid Well Control Certification - Supervisor level.
• Willingness to be fully mobile and relocate to project locations as required.
Preferred
• Experience with Halliburton Landmark drilling suite of software and drilling automation technologies.
• Multidisciplinary operations experience across drilling, completions, and intervention.
• Proficiency in additional languages (e.g., Russian or Arabic).
• Prior well supervisory experience.
