Under general supervision, leads and executes programs as required, by establishing project development plans and approving design documents that follow Health, Safety, and Environment processes. Provides engineering guidance and uses advanced engineering techniques and proposes new technologies to address unique system needs. Collaborates with other engineering disciplines about standards and techniques for calculations. Updates processes, procedures, and calculation tools for general use. Applies industry standards and regulations in design, testing and evaluation. Delivers innovative Intellectual Property recommendations for Halliburton and reviews technical papers. Provides technical expertise to meet internal and external customer needs and requirements. Promotes and contributes to a cohesive team environment and maintains open lines of communication with all levels of the organization. Represents Halliburton in professional societies in area of specialization. Skills acquired through the completion of an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering or similar discipline and 6 years of related experience. Completion of a masters or doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering or similar discipline is preferred.

 

  • Architect & lead design, development, implementation, verification, validation & reliability growth of embedded digital electronics based systems & components as applied on downhole & surface equipment/tools as part of drilling, wireline, perforating technologies 
  • Design and analysis of data acquisition systems including A/D, D/A, high speed Microcontrollers, Digital Signal Processors (DSP), FPGA, I/O communications (SPORT, CAN, SPI, I2C, RS485, RS232, Ethernet, etc.), volatile and non-volatile memory. 
  • Integrate motor controller chips, analog products and firmware to deliver overall motor controller functionality.
  • Develop schematic for digital and mixed signal circuits and board design, including: microcontrollers, processors, memory interfaces, digital interface buses, point of load power distribution. Perform digital system simulation, analysis, and design of high-speed digital circuits. Perform system verification and validation including use of laboratory test equipment and proper probing techniques for circuit development and verification. Perform board level rework to support development and testing. Work with PCB designers to develop PCB layout for high-frequency switching circuits minimizing EMI issues.
  • Understanding of various motor control methods (Field Oriented/scalar) and its impact to the hardware design.
  • Utilize commonly used circuit simulators (LTSPICE, PSPICE, etc.)
  • Utilize  math tools (Matlab, MathCAD, etc.)
  • Work with electrical systems, firmware and mechanical engineers to develop solutions as required for the product.
  • Present in design reviews of internal developments and review third party designs
  • Develop component qualification plans and lead execution of plans.
  • Lead functional and qualification testing of the designed boards and sub-assemblies. Support functional testing for motor controllers on Hardware-in-the-loop simulator, dynamometers and on assembled tool.
  • Document designs, specifications, test plans, revisions and produce test reports
  • Lead  troubleshooting of boards
  • Present technical status, risk plans and reports to management
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership to other personnel in the team in developing new approaches to solve problems.
  • Prepared to work on several projects at a given time or highly complicated projects that require a creative team work. Work with cross-functional teams during product life-cycle

A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering or similar discipline and a minimum of 6 years related experience are required for the position. A master’s degree or PhD in electrical/electronics engineering with emphasis on digital electronics and license/charter as a Professional Engineer are preferred.

 

Role - Principal Motor Control Firmware Engineer

 

Responsibilities - 

  • Architect & lead benchmarking, modeling, design, prototyping, implementation, verification, and validation of motor controls for Haliburton Drilling & Wireline downhole/Surface tools. Actively collaborate with motor designers, firmware, hardware, & systems teams during product life cycle.
  • Creating motor control algorithms on Simulink, generate autocode, interface with firmware, deploying it on embedded platforms, verifying the design on Hardware-in-the-loop simulator, dynamometer & assembled tool.
  • Apply motor controls, as required, including- scalar control, vector (field-oriented) control, direct torque control, six-step or trapezoidal commutation, Clarke/Park transforms, flux-weakening, Maximum-Torque-Per-Amp, Maximum-Torque-Per-Volt, pulse width modulation schemes (sinusoidal, third harmonic injection, space vector, continuous, discontinuous), sensorless position & speed observers or utilizing position/speed sensors
  • Strong proficiency in classic & modern control theory: stability, controllability, observability, Bode plots, Nyquist diagrams, closed-loop transfer function, feed-forward, Laplace transform, z-transform, linear quadratic regulator, filter design, Kalman filters continuous & discrete time domains, PID regulators, adaptive control.
  • Model motor loads & optimize motor control based on the load dynamics.
  • Expertise with embedded microcontrollers or DSPs (architecture, peripherals, functioning, performance constraints)
  • Expertise with embedded C/C++ code for embedded microcontrollers & integrating auto generated code with infrastructure code
  • Experience with real-time simulation, model-based design, hardware-in-loop, & code generation using Simulink
  • Experience with speed/positions sensors: Hall, encoders & resolvers
  • Familiarity with analog signal conditioning electronics (amplifiers & filters) & current sensors
  • Familiarity with related power electronics (3-phase inverters, MOSFETs, gate drivers) & required protections (Over/under voltage/current etc)
  • Familiarity with induction, brushless DC, & permanent magnet synchronous motors (design topologies, geometry, materials, equivalent schemes, & modeling)
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a solid analytical & practical (hands-on) approach
  • Present in design reviews of internal developments & review third party designs
  • Document firmware designs, specifications, test plans, revisions & produce test reports

Role - Principal Power Electronics Engineer

 

Responsibilities - 

  • Architect & lead design, development, implementation, verification, validation & reliability growth of power electronics based systems & components as applied on downhole & surface equipment/tools as part of drilling, wireline, perforating technologies
  • Develop common AC/DC and DC/DC converter topologies (buck, boost, buck-boost, fly-back, forward, half-bridge, full-bridge, etc.) & DC/AC 3-phase inverters to drive BLDC motors
  • Design complete power electronics converter systems (active/passive component selection, input/output filter design, compensation circuit design, gate driver circuits, etc.) for  up to 3300Volt applications
  • Develop specification & design of  magnetic components (power inductor, transformer) and BLDC Motors.
  • Understanding of various motor control methods (Field Oriented/Trapezoidal) and its impact to the hardware design.
  • Develop solutions with wide-bandgap power semiconductor devices (SiC MOSFETs) with full understanding of high-temperature characteristics
  • Calculate device losses and develop specifications for  thermal management (heat sinks) for high-density power converters
  • Develop schematic and support PCB design
  • Develop layout of PCB’s  for high-frequency switching circuits minimizing EMI issues
  • Lead  troubleshooting of power converter/inverter  boards
  • Utilize commonly used circuit simulators (LTSPICE, PSPICE, etc.)
