Under general direction from Team Leads and Management, applies physics theories, principles, and practices to develop technology for acoustic logging measurements in oil and gas wells.


Duties will include:

  1. Collaborate with a global team of scientists and engineers to design and develop computer models, experiments, and algorithms for acoustic logging sensors, measurements, and tools.
  2. Develop new scientific algorithms to convert acoustic sensor measurements into the desired formation properties.
  3. Drive implementation of R&D algorithms and workflows into production-scale solutions.
  4. Work with engineering and software teams to implement the sensor designs and algorithms.
  5. Specify detailed plans for laboratory measurements.
  6. Analyze laboratory and computer-modeling data to devise the required algorithms.
  7. Work with the field to resolve systematic issues observed with acoustic measurements or algorithms.
  8. Prepare and deliver internal presentations and technical reports describing results, conclusions, and recommendations.
  9. Write papers for presentation at relevant technical conferences.
  10. Contribute to company Intellectual Property advancement through publications and patents.
  11. Work in a safe manner and comply with all Halliburton HSE requirements.


Minimum of a Master’s degree in related scientific or engineering discipline such as Physics, Geophysics, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or Data Science. A PhD degree is preferred.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in signal processing, filtering, data analysis, and algorithm development.
  • Proficiency in imaging processing and data compression for communication systems.
  • Experience developing and delivering validated data compression algorithms for time series or image data, as well as experience with firmware development.
  • Proficiency in processing laboratory and field data.
  • Experience designing laboratory tests and analyzing results.
  • Proficiency in C, C++, C#, Python, or MATLAB programming.
  • Excellent written and verbal English-language communication skills.
  • Ability to interact with teams characterized by diverse technical focus.
  • Highly motivated and possessing an ability to quickly learn new concepts.
  • Ability to conduct research that tests or analyzes the feasibility, design, operation, or performance of equipment, components, or systems.
  • Conceives and documents Patent Disclosures to describe new methods and systems.

Desired Skills

  • Industry experience of at least 5 years post-Master’s or 3 years post-PhD.
  • Geophysical (e.g., acoustic, seismic, electromagnetic, radar) data processing experience of at least 3 years.
  • Extensive experience with acoustic or ultrasonic data processing for cased-hole environments.
  • Experience commercializing real-time data compression algorithms.
  • Proven track record of publications and patents related to image processing and data compression.
  • Proficiency with cloud or high performance computing.
