Senior Geophysicist
14, MY, 48300
We are looking for the right people — people who want to innovate, achieve, grow and lead. We attract and retain the best talent by investing in our employees and empowering them to develop themselves and their careers. Experience the challenges, rewards and opportunity of working for one of the world’s largest providers of products and services to the global energy industry.
Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Geophysicist to join our team and support exploration and development projects through advanced seismic interpretation, structural modeling, and depth conversion analysis. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in seismic well-ties, time-depth conversion, seismic attribute interpretation, and fault and horizon mapping. This role will focus on integrating seismic data with geological models, evaluating structural uncertainty, and providing insights to optimize reservoir management and development strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Seismic to Well-Tie Review and Revision:
- Review and revise existing seismic to well-tie correlations to improve the alignment between wells and seismic datasets.
- Analyze and quantify uncertainty between seismic and well-ties to improve model accuracy.
- Seismic Interpretation:
- Review and update seismic interpretation (fault interpretation and horizon mapping) to ensure structural models are fit-for-purpose for static modeling input.
- Perform structural integrity checks by generating 3D structural models to validate seismic interpretations prior to finalization.
- Time-Depth Conversion Evaluation:
- Evaluate various time-depth conversion options and identify a technically robust method as the base case. Options should include, but are not limited to:
- Well Velocity-Based Model: Develop a single velocity function calibrated against existing well data, and integrate VoK using sonic/interval velocity where applicable.
- Integrated Well and Seismic Velocity-Based Model: Perform surface-based depth conversion with calibration to well markers and volume-based 3D grid depth conversion calibrated to well velocity or markers.
- Evaluate various time-depth conversion options and identify a technically robust method as the base case. Options should include, but are not limited to:
- Depth Conversion Uncertainty Analysis:
- Perform depth conversion uncertainty analysis and generate depth error prediction statistics (mean and standard deviation).
- Use the depth error statistics for sensitivity analysis (structural uncertainty) during volumetric calculations to support more reliable resource assessments.
- Seismic Attribute Interpretation:
- Conduct qualitative and quantitative interpretation of seismic attributes to understand structure, rock property distribution, and fluid property distribution.
- Use techniques such as:
- Well Log-Based Seismic Forward Modeling: Understand the effects of thickness variation, fluid type, and properties, particularly for near-field exploration/appraisal targets.
- Amplitude and Seismic Attribute Analysis: Analyze Full, Near, and Far Angle Stacks, including instantaneous and interval extractions, to crossplot seismic attributes with reservoir parameters like thickness and porosity.
- AVO (Amplitude Versus Offset) Response Analysis: Evaluate angle stack responses (Far/Near, Far minus Near) and document anomalies for appraisal potential, using inversion products like AI and Vp/Vs, when applicable.
- Spectral Decomposition Analysis: Use RMS from Iso-frequency volumes (e.g., 20, 30, 40, 50 Hz) for qualitative depositional trend analysis, contributing to static model inputs.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Minimum 15 years of experience as a geophysicist in the oil and gas industry, specializing in seismic interpretation and structural modeling.
- At least 10 years of hands-on experience in seismic interpretation, including fault interpretation, horizon mapping, and time-depth conversion evaluations.
- Minimum 10 years of specific experience working in Malaysian basins, with a strong understanding of regional geology and geophysical data.
- At least 10 years of experience in exploration and petroleum development projects within the past 15 years, with a focus on reservoir characterization and structural modeling.
- Proven experience in performing depth conversion uncertainty analysis and conducting sensitivity studies to assess structural uncertainty during volumetric calculations.
- Strong proficiency in seismic interpretation software and tools such as DSG, Petrel platforms.
- A comprehensive understanding of geophysical principles, with the ability to integrate geophysical data into accurate and reliable reservoir models.
