Senior Petrophysicist
14, MY, 48300
We are looking for the right people — people who want to innovate, achieve, grow and lead. We attract and retain the best talent by investing in our employees and empowering them to develop themselves and their careers. Experience the challenges, rewards and opportunity of working for one of the world’s largest providers of products and services to the global energy industry.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly experienced and detail-oriented Senior Petrophysicist to join our team. This role will involve a wide range of petrophysical analyses, from screening and interpreting well log data to determining reservoir characteristics and fluid properties. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of petrophysical principles and the ability to calibrate models with available data, ensuring the most accurate reservoir evaluations for optimal field development.
Key Responsibilities:
- Net Sand Screening and Interpretation:
- Screen well log data for carbonate, tight streaks, coal, invalid, and badhole zones before conducting detailed interpretation.
- Calculate and interpret the volume of shale (VSH) on a zonal basis from raw gamma ray data, comparing results with LPSA (Log Porosity and Shale Analysis) and D-N (Dual-porosity) methods.
- Calculate VCL (Volume of Clay) from VSH and validate against XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) data.
- Define VSH cut-offs for capturing maximum GIIP (Gas Initially In Place) or OIIP (Oil Initially In Place).
- Compare gross sand counts with OBMI (Open Hole Bulk Measurement Index) data where available.
- Porosity Analysis:
- Determine the optimal parameters and methods for calculating log porosity.
- Validate porosity logs through calibration against RCA (Core Analysis) porosity data.
- If available, calibrate to NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) porosity measurements.
- Permeability Analysis:
- Select and apply the best method(s) for calculating permeability from well logs.
- Validate permeability calculations by comparing them with RCA permeability data.
- If available, calibrate permeability calculations to NMR permeability data.
- Analyze porosity vs. permeability relationships by facies.
- Calibrate permeability to MDT (Modular Dynamic Tester) mobility data.
- Assess permeability trends with depth by facies and report on variations.
- Water Saturation (Sw) Calculation:
- Calculate water saturation using both the Archie and Waxman-Smits (and/or Waxman-Thomas) equations.
- Incorporate all available electrical properties and formation water samples to determine water saturation.
- Perform sensitivity analysis on Waxman-Smits parameters and report on unclipped water saturations.
- Calibrate water saturation calculations with Dean Stark (if available).
- Utilize SCAL (Special Core Analysis) data, including capillary pressure (Pc) data, to compute the Saturation Height Function.
- Apply the classical Leverett approach and report statistics for back-calculating water saturation from core data by facies.
- Calibrate the J-Function to log-derived water saturations at observed fluid contacts.
- Fluid Contacts and Pressure Data Interpretation:
- Analyze and interpret pressure test data to identify fluid contacts and trends, reconciling with structural maps and data.
- Correlate interpreted fluid contacts with the J-Function and log-derived water saturations.
- Integrate cased-hole logging data (if available) to assist in model calibration for fluid contacts in reservoir simulation models.
- Provide a final fluid contact table for each reservoir and fault block in each well.
- Fluid Typing and Fluid Flagging:
- Differentiate and classify fluid types in each well based on log responses, formation pressure, fluid samples, and mud log data.
- Indicate fluid types clearly in the final composite log for each well.
- Petrophysical Parameter Uncertainty and Sensitivity Analysis:
- Conduct uncertainty and sensitivity analysis for key petrophysical parameters involved in the interpretation.
- Quantify the impact of uncertainties on reservoir evaluation and production forecasts.
- Final Output and Reporting:
- Produce a comprehensive final evaluation of petrophysical parameters.
- Generate final composite logs for all wells.
- Prepare final LAS (Log ASCII Standard) files containing all well log properties.
- Compile and provide a final pay summary table for each well, highlighting key petrophysical attributes and their implications for reservoir development.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Minimum 15 years of experience as a Petrophysicist in the oil and gas industry.
- At least 10 years of experience in exploration and petroleum development projects within the last 15 years.
- Minimum 10 years of specific experience working in Malaysian basins and FDP projects in Malayisa, with a strong understanding of regional geology
- Expertise in screening well logs for carbonate, coal, and other anomalies; calculating VSH/VCL; and determining optimal methods for porosity and permeability calculations.
- Experience in calibrating petrophysical data to RCA and DST (Drill Stem Test) results.
- Proficient in calculating and interpreting water saturation (Sw) using Archie and Waxman-Smits equations, and calibrating to Dean Stark and core data.
- Familiarity with core analysis, SCAL data interpretation, and the application of the J-Function to well log-derived water saturations.
- Strong understanding of fluid contacts, fluid typing, and integration with pressure interpretation data.
- Experience with uncertainty analysis and sensitivity testing of petrophysical parameters.
- Proficiency in petrophysical software and logging interpretation tools.
