Senior Geoscience Specialist
Abingdon, OXF, GB, OX14 4RW
We are looking for the right people — people who want to innovate, achieve, grow and lead. We attract and retain the best talent by investing in our employees and empowering them to develop themselves and their careers. Experience the challenges, rewards and opportunity of working for one of the world’s largest providers of products and services to the global energy industry.
Job Duties
Are you a geoscientist with strong programming and machine learning skills who wants to develop novel science to solve real subsurface challenges?
Join the geoscience research team at Landmark Software & Services where you will help develop new solutions that improve geological interpretation, reservoir understanding, and subsurface modelling.
Key Responsibilities
You will lead the development of cutting-edge geoscience research for novel subsurface workflows. Working with geoscientists, data scientists, and product teams you will translate geological concepts into robust computational methods, prototype new AI-enabled workflows, and proactively identify opportunities to advance domain technology.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Degree in geoscience, geology, petroleum geoscience, computational geoscience, or a related discipline; completion of a master’s degree or PhD is preferred.
- 10 years of relevant experience.
- Strong geoscience expertise in areas such as stratigraphy, sedimentology, petroleum geology, reservoir characterization, or subsurface interpretation.
- Experience working with subsurface datasets such as wireline logs, seismic, biostratigraphy, stratigraphic surfaces, maps, or reservoir models.
- Strong Python programming skills and hands-on experience with scientific and machine learning libraries.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to geoscientists, software engineers, data scientists, and product stakeholders.
- AI / ML Implementation
- Design, implement, and test AI/ML methods that automate or enhance subsurface interpretation, prediction, and modelling.
- Apply data-driven approaches to sparse, noisy, and heterogeneous geoscience datasets.
- Develop methods that preserve geological realism, respect subsurface uncertainty, and improve the conditioning of geological models to available data.
- Validate predictive models using blind tests, real-world datasets, geological quality checks, and product-relevant scenarios.
- Collaboration & Innovation
- Work closely with geoscientists, software engineers, data scientists, and product teams to turn research ideas into practical prototype workflows.
- Stay current with relevant advances in AI/ML, geoscience analytics, and subsurface modelling, and assess how they can be applied within Landmark workflows.
- Lead and contribute to technical presentations, publications, patent disclosures, and internal knowledge-sharing activities.
Qualifications
- PhD or equivalent research experience in geoscience, computational geoscience, machine learning, or a related field.
- Proven application of AI/ML to geoscience, subsurface interpretation, reservoir modelling, or geological prediction problems.
- Experience with energy-sector datasets, workflows, or software products.
- Familiarity with geological process modelling, or uncertainty-aware subsurface workflows.
