About the Role

The Associate Materials Scientist – Metallics & Welding supports the development, qualification, and performance optimization of metallic materials and welding processes used in Drill Bits & Services products. Working under direct supervision, this role assists in material selection, laboratory testing, process evaluation, and failure analysis to ensure product reliability, durability, and manufacturability in demanding drilling environments.

This position provides foundational experience in applied metallurgy and welding science within a high-performance oilfield manufacturing environment.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the selection and evaluation of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys for drill bit components and related hardware.
  • Assist in development and qualification of welding, hardfacing, and thermal processing techniques.
  • Participate in laboratory testing and materials characterization, including mechanical testing, metallography, hardness testing, and microstructural analysis.
  • Analyze test data and prepare technical summaries to support engineering decisions.
  • Assist in troubleshooting materials-related manufacturing or field performance issues.
  • Support qualification of forgings, castings, welded fabrications, and heat-treated components.
  • Apply Reliability, HSE, and Quality standards in laboratory and manufacturing environments.
  • Contribute to documentation of materials specifications, procedures, and test reports.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, engineering, and quality teams to support product and process improvements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering, Welding Engineering, Materials Science, or related discipline required.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of metallic materials, heat treatment, and welding processes.
  • Familiarity with materials testing techniques and laboratory instrumentation preferred.
  • Basic understanding of failure analysis and metallurgical evaluation principles.
  • Strong analytical, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in laboratory and manufacturing environments.
